At your local Citizens Advice Bureau we can give you free and completely independent advice and information on a wide range of subjects.

C1.GIF (9401 bytes)  Unemployment, debt and home repossession are just some of the problems faced by millions of people every day, as job security becomes more widespread and wages or benefits fail to cover the cost of living. The CAB helps people to tackle their problems head on with advice, information and practical support. As well as working with clients to sort out their individual problems, the CAB Service works to change services and policies which are failing.

Social security enquiries form a large part of the CAB's work. Advisers sort out difficulties with benefit claims,help to fill in forms and ensure people are receiving their full entitlement. They advice on benefits which can be claimed while working, which can help people back into the employment market.


C3.GIF (11006 bytes)Debt is a problem for millions of CAB clients, threatening health, home and family stability. The most common advice from the CAB is to tackle it early - don't let the bills pile up. Advisers can help to draw up a budget and agree a realistic repayment plan, in may cases negotiation with creditors such as utilities companies and building societies.

Employment problems often reflect deteriorating terms and conditions in the workplace. The CAB can advise on contracts and statutory rights for employers and employees, and suggest courses of action following redundancy or dismissal.


Bureaux advise on all aspects of housing including tenancy agreements, repairs and cases of harassment. The CAB can negotiate for clients in mortgage or rent arrears, and homelessness can frequently be prevented.

C2.GIF (10970 bytes)People seek guidance from the CAB on a wide range of legal issues, including going to court, claiming compensation, entitlement to legal aid and complaints against solicitors and the police.

The CAB advises on immigration and nationality: people may be seeking asylum or separated from their families abroad.

Tax advice includes facts and figures about income tax and council tax and help with forms.


Whatever you tell us will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. Our advice is given professionally by fully trained voluntary and paid staff. Every bureau uses a national information system.

Many bureaux are accessible to disabled people and it may be possible to visit you at home.
